Frisbee's first journey into Uganda.
Nine years ago, Ultimate Frisbee was introduced for the first time ever in Uganda by Rachel King and Janet Weaver. Rachel was a volunteer with Doctors without Borders (Médecins sans Frontières), Janet with the Irish NGO Goal. Together with their friends, they started to meet every Sunday to play. None of them was very experienced at Ultimate, but all developed an intense love for the game, and they quickly passed it on to many others!
Rachel, Janet and their friends wanted to bring together all those who shared the enthusiasm for Ultimate and had never had the chance of playing it in Uganda . They also wanted to have a good time, promote fitness, and introduce Ultimate to the many Ugandans who had never heard of it.
Since then, the game has
picked up; many have joined and loved it. We have formed a the Kampala
Ultimate Frisbee Club (KUFC), which sounds like a great thing, but
in reality we are still struggling to exist! We are a group of all
genders (only 2 thus far), ages, nationalities and occupations who
are committed to play every time we can land our hands on a Frisbee! We're
working hard to ensure that the game continues to grow and that
tournaments are organized every year.
In March 2005, this year's
first tournament was organized in Kampala Rugby Club with 5 teams
including the US Peace Corps volunteers, a Canadian team, and 3
Kampala teams including KUFC. The tournament was great fun thanks
to everyone's contribution and we're looking to the next one planned
for October-November.
